An Aside on Ignorance

I read this today:

Windows Vista: The installation of Windows Vista is extremely easy. After putting in the DVD and you will be asked if you want to start from the disc. The next step is basically just to confirm that you want to install Vista on that computer and the machine does all the rest. About 20 minutes later you will be asked to enter your account name and to select an avatar and a wallpaper. After downloading five security patches the Windows system is good to go. It’s the easy going and pleasant way to install a new OS we are expecting from Microsoft. Let’s see how others are doing.

Ubuntu: The installation process with Ubuntu is qute confusing. After starting from the disc you will be asked if you want to start the “Live CD” or install the system or start from the hard drive, which is silly because there is no OS installed on the hard drive. Ubuntu seems not to be smart enough to be aware of that simple fact[...]Even IT-professionals like me will have a very hard time to get the system running. Why does this have to be so complicated?

(Part of this article, which I have not read in entirety.)

I don’t even have something cogent to say. I’m just crying. The comments (“When will open-sourcers learn to shut up about their Hardy Herron (sic). It’s a complete failure! “) made me bawl.

+1 for FUD.

If this guy actually works in IT and can’t figure out how to install Ubuntu, his company should really consider if he is a valuable employee. Unbelievable. I could understand if the person was an inexperienced computer user, but by claiming you work in the field makes this hilarious and frightening. I guess I have some job security after all. I shall join you in the tears of disgust.

STR is a known satire-oriented website. If you read more of the material on the site, it becomes more obvious.

The author does a half-decent job of keeping it non-obvious. No article in and of itself looks like obvious satire, but the site taken in context does.

I was worried for a minute, then I realized that this came from Shelley The Republican, a known example of Poe’s Law: namely, that “without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won’t mistake for the real thing.”

STR takes it to its most logical extremes with its anti-Linux pieces. However, anyone with the necessary knowledge can tell that it’s a joke, and that you should be laughing.

Haigh Rannsaic, bail ó Dhia ar an obair! Rannsaic mo intinn, lol, is maith liom an t-ainm.

I always say hello when I find the Gaeil on the net.

Just installed Jaunty and it’s easily the best Ubuntu release ever.

    No problems at all.

    Take care.
